The song is finally finished! Using my mentor's iPad and Garage Band, finishing editing my song was nice and simple. Garage Band offered multiple different instruments to use at my disposal. I added an underlying drum line and added some other effects to the guitar. When the song was finished, my mentor exported the song and now all that's left is to publish it!

The recording software was too difficult to work with, especially since it was a free version. Luckily, my mentor was able to lend me his iPad for a few days, along with some recording software. I spent several hours pushing to finish the song, and the recording software on the iPad, Garage Band, is much easier to work with. Hopefully I'll be able to finish my song soon!
Since my mentor had the previous recording software that I used, I have to find a new one. The free software that I decided on was a trial version of Fruity Loops. This program is much more complicated and difficult to use than Garage Band is. Luckily, I was able to borrow recording software from my mentor to use, and I'm getting a little bit better with Fruity Loops. The main part that I'm concerned about is adding other instruments, since Garage Band provided those and Fruity Loops does not, but only time will tell how this project will turn out.
Quarantine has definitely put a wedge in my senior project, but I'm sure I am luckier than others. I contacted my mentor, and today we had a video call to discuss the future of my project. My mentor and I can't exactly meet face-to-face at the current moment, which is a huge inconvenience since my mentor was the one with the recording software and fancy tools. The overall downside of quarantine is that, since we can't meet to finish the recording, I have to start over. Also, the app we were using to mix the song was on his iPad, so I have downloaded various free recording software that I now need to get used too. The final downside I can see right now is that any extra instruments I wanted to add are going to have to be improvised, as I only have an acoustic guitar. I'm not going to complain about starting over, as recording the song should be the easiest part of the project and my mentor is still willing to help me get this project done.Progress on the senior project in February went a little slower than I'd have liked. I met with my mentor twice and we began recording everything over to his iPad, since it would make editing the song and getting the timing down much easier. So far the only instruments in the song are my acoustic guitar and some drums. I'm hoping to get to adding a bass guitar to the mix, and maybe a keyboard too.
Working on the song with my mentor has gotten much easier. I'm getting used to the program Garage Band, and the recording process as a whole. When I met up with my mentor last time, his recording equipment was temporarily out of order, so much of the time spent on the last meeting was used to continue writing the song. Base chords and a bridge are finished so far, and I believe we are going to work on the percussion next time.
This meeting with my mentor went extremely well. He had brought in recording equipment, as well as various tools to help with the song-making process. A few of these tools would be his Midi keyboard and an app called Garage Band. We recorded the basic strumming pattern to the song and added a temporary drum line, but the session was mostly spent getting familiar with the recording program. Once we have a steady drum-line and a solid melody to work off of, we can start adding other instruments, such as the electric guitar or maybe some piano.
This project has proven to be more tough than I first imagined, but I've been working hard on it. Over Christmas break, I worked on my Senior project whenever I could. Music theory is far too complicated for me to understand, but I'm learning more about which chords work best with each other thanks to my mentor, as well as other aspects of the song-writing process. The process as a whole will be grueling, but I'm determined to get it finished.
This Monday, the 9th, I finally started working on my senior project. The process is going to be difficult, as I feel like I didn't get quite as much accomplished as I would have liked, but I think after that first meeting it should go more smoothly. Hopefully throughout the year working with my mentor will become easier and we can get more done within the time span that we have. I'm more nervous than ever going into this project, but I'm also excited to see how the final product turns out!
All of our Senior paper stuff is done with, so now it's time to contact the mentors. I'm really excited to finally start working on the project portion of my Senior project. Contacting my mentor should be pretty easy, and soon we'll begin working with our mentors. We also have to fill out a Senior Paper self-evaluation form, so we should keep pretty busy!
